Records Revival: Colonial Documents Going Digital

The Louisiana Historical Center houses the Louisiana Colonial Judicial Records of both the French Superior Council (1714-1769) and the Spanish Judiciary (1769-1803). These criminal and civil records are an invaluable source for researching Louisiana’s colonial history. Microfilm copies of the collections are available at the Louisiana State Archives and the Family History Library in Salt Lake City. Digital images of a handful of documents have also been placed in the LOUISiana Digital Library.

To better preserve the contents and to provide free and universal access to the collection, the Louisiana State Museum has begun a project to digitize and publish the archive online in a searchable database. A fundraiser for this effort will be held Saturday, December 8 , from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Old U.S. Mint in New Orleans. For details, see the Louisiana Museum Foundation website.
