Welcome
To Current and Future Members of the Greater New Orleans Archivists,

I am deeply honored to write to you as the incoming President of GNOA, and I wanted to take this opportunity to share my enthusiasm for serving our vibrant archival community.

As Head of Archives at Xavier University of Louisiana, I have witnessed firsthand the vital importance of preserving and protecting our city's rich cultural heritage. Our work as archivists in New Orleans carries special significance – we are the custodians of a unique historical tapestry that weaves together African American history, Creole culture, jazz, civil rights movements, and countless other threads that make our city extraordinary. Our work is more important than ever, and I am committed to fostering an environment where all members of the greater New Orleans community can collaborate, innovate, and grow. I am excited to work alongside each of you as we continue to strengthen our professional community, share knowledge and resources, and advocate for the preservation of New Orleans' cultural heritage.
In my role as President, I look forward to:
-
Fostering collaboration between our diverse institutions
-
Creating meaningful professional development opportunities
-
Building stronger connections with the communities we serve
-
Addressing the unique challenges faced by archives in our region
Our city's archives, museums, and cultural institutions hold the memories, struggles, triumphs, and dreams of generations of New Orleanians. Together, we can ensure these invaluable materials are preserved and made accessible for future generations.
Our community is strengthened by the diverse voices and perspectives that each of us brings to the table. I am dedicated to creating a welcoming and supportive environment for everyone, regardless of gender, race, faith, or cultural background. Together, we can build a more inclusive and equitable future for our profession and the communities we serve. I will always welcome your ideas, feedback, and participation as we move forward. Please don't hesitate to reach out to me with your thoughts on how we can make GNOA an even stronger organization.
With great anticipation for our work together,
Vinny Barraza
President, Greater New Orleans Archivists
